An emergency blade and a backup start provision. GM keyless fobs typically include a mechanical blade for the driver's door, and vehicles document a backup starting method for a dead fob battery in the owner's manual. Both are one-off provisions for getting out of a bind, not replacements for a working second fob.

What is absent is as important as what is present. There is no ignition lock cylinder to wear out, which removes a whole category of failure that dominates older vehicles. A Bolt owner will never need the ignition lock cylinder repair that a fifteen-year-old truck owner eventually does.

The 12-Volt Trap

If you take one practical thing from this article, take this.

Every module in a Bolt — the keyless entry receiver, the body control module, the display, the door locks — runs on a conventional 12-volt battery, exactly like a gasoline car. The high-voltage traction pack drives the wheels. It does not power the electronics that listen for your key.

So a Bolt can show a full charge and be completely unresponsive. Fob does nothing. Doors will not unlock. Nothing happens at the start button. It presents as a total electrical death or a failed key, and the actual cause is a 12-volt battery that has aged out or been drained.

This matters for two reasons. First, it wastes money — we have been called out for "key not working" on EVs that needed a 12-volt battery, and we would rather tell you that on the phone. Second, low 12-volt voltage genuinely interferes with key programming. Attempting to write key data into a module running on marginal voltage is how a straightforward job turns into a module problem, which is why a regulated supply goes on the battery before any programming begins.

What Decides the Price

Four factors, in order of impact.

Whether you still have a working fob

This is the largest single driver, and it dwarfs the others.

Adding a spare while the vehicle already recognizes a working fob is a routine add operation. The vehicle authenticates the key it trusts and accepts the new one.

Losing every key inverts it. The vehicle has nothing to authenticate against, so the security data has to be reached by another route — which takes longer and prices higher. Model year and security architecture

GM's key programming architecture changed meaningfully during the Bolt's production run, and the change is not something you can read off the badge. Symptoms That Are Not a Key Problem

How the Job Runs at Your Location
