Cloning

Cloning means reading the identity and adaptation data out of your original module β€” the ISN, the VIN, the immobilizer-relevant values, and typically the learned adaptations β€” and writing that data onto the donor module. The result is a module that presents itself to your car as the original. Your existing keys keep working. The immobilizer never notices a change. Nothing else on the car has to be touched.

The obvious catch: cloning requires your original module to still be readable. If it is water-damaged, has a cracked processor solder joint, or is electrically dead, there may be nothing to copy. Sometimes the data can still be recovered directly from the memory device on the board even when the module will not communicate normally β€” that is bench work with EEPROM-level access, not an OBD-II procedure.

Re-Alignment

Re-alignment takes the opposite approach: you accept the donor module's identity and instead update the immobilizer side so the car trusts it. Depending on generation that can involve the immobilizer authority, the keys, and sometimes the cluster. It is more invasive, touches more modules, and on some platforms simply is not available without manufacturer authorization.

Where re-alignment does work cleanly, it is the better choice for a car whose original module is unreadable.

Virgin Modules

A third path exists on some families: a module that has been reset to a factory-blank state, with no prior identity, which is then written to your car. When available it is the cleanest option, but availability is generation-dependent and not something to count on before diagnosis.

OBD Work Versus Bench Work
